UnifEID: One Ummah. One Eid.

An email I got that needs to get more coverage. I’m copy-pasting it here and since it’s heavily formatted, it may look awkward. This applies ONLY to the Muslims living in the Greater Toronto Area in Canada but a similar initiative in other areas would be a good idea. đŸ™‚

Let us ask you a question…

And answer us very honestly.

Is this how you think?

Is this what you believe?
If so…then let us tell you something
We know from history...

that in the making of any history,

a spectator majority sat on the bleachers to watch…

while a determined minority redefined the impossible.

Now…the question really is, which of the two are you?

  1. ASA,

This would be great as long as the sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) is followed and the moon is sighted according to traditional Islam. Nothing but fitnah will come if you follow Saudi. Just look how they were wrong (again) last Eid.

  2. Dear Abdullah,

You have a good point with the fact that the Sunnah must be followed in order to be successful. I am with you 100%.

But we must remember to respect the other major points of view which also have validity as being in line with the Qur’an and Sunnah as put forth by major scholars.

If we look at the website, they are promoting consensus between the major points of view, to decide which one is best in line with the Qur’an and Sunnah and join the bandwagon which means people will have to compromise for a MUCH GREATER GOOD which also happens to be a fard (mandatory act), which is UNITy.

  3. Also, from what I understand Unifeid as a matter of policy will NOT pick a side.

Update: A lot of MAJOR scholars of Islam (both Canadian and International) have now endorsed this project, and thousands upon thousands of signatures from ordinary Muslims have been signed.

  4. Was it last year I believe when in Toronto there was some 90 masjids that agreed to have Eid on one day…but there were only 3-4 who agreed to have it the other day?

I thought it was ironic because the ones that had it on the second day are always going on about following the Quran and Sunnah, the more Salafi-bent in other words. It is funny because I know Salafis love the hadith about following the jamah and how the jamah can never be wrong and they automatically think that they are the jamah…when in fact, in this scenario–they were not.

    Keep up the good work!
