Twenty Five Statements To Ponder Over


This post comes coutesy of Jinn Zaman. I’ve tried to explain some of the less well-known parts in the footnotes if that helps. Ponder over them and see for yourself just how much truth is in these statements! 🙂

1. “Be aware of Allah, and Allah Himself will teach you.” (Qur’an 2:282)

7. “Were it not for connected transmission (isnad), whoever wanted would say whatever they wanted.” (Abdallah ibn al-Mubarak)

8. “The legacy of the company of bad people is to think evil of the good.” (Bishr ibn al-Harith)

9. “The common people repent from sins but the elect repent from distraction.” (Dhu’l-Nun al-Misri)

10. “He who restrains his limbs, rests his heart, he who releases them, exhausts his heart.” (Ibn Arabi)

11. “These are not men, only men’s faces they have, Slaves of the stomach, victims of sensuality.” (Maulana Rumi)

12. “For those who realize that everything is from Allah, everything is the same.” (Rumi)

13. “A Jurist Sufi is better than a Sufi Jurist.” (Sidi Ahmad Zarruq)

14. “The nafs wants to be a chief so that everybody will bow to it and it dislikes needing or being under someone elses command.” (Imam Rabbani)

15..”When you are absent with your Lord, you are present with your nafs.” (Imam Daghestani)

16. “Man tries to swallow the world, but the world ends up swallowing him.” (Shaykh al-Daghestani, Shaykh Nazim)

17. “O oppressor, there is still time for repentance, do not delay, the one who fell and got up has not fallen.” (Mufti Muhammad Shafi Usmani)

18. “A thief will only steal from a house with something of worth in it. Shaytan only attacks a heart seeking Allah.” (Maulana Javed Bhaiyat)

19. “Activism will only succeed when it remembers that history is in good hands.” (Shaykh Abdul Hakim Murad)

20. “We must strategize based on knowing our weaknesses, not on the delusions of strength.” (Imam Zaid Shakir)

23. Sufism is orthopraxy while Salafism is heterodontics. (Fouzia Haq)*

24. The desire for safety stands against every great and noble enterprise (Tacitus)

25..”Science is the myth of today, myths are the scientific theories of ages past.” (A book I read at UMBC)

*Orthopraxis = orthodoxy in a functional manner

Heterodontics = is a play on the word ‘orthodontics’ which is the study of proper teeth formation, i.e. its the study of bad teeth meaning people who are obsessed with form as opposed to more important things and on top of that, they’re concerned with bad form.
