Hadith Notes- Musnad of Imam Ahmad

Bismillah

One of the most beautiful collections of hadith I have come across is the Musnad of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (rahimullah). It’s one of the most beloved compilations I have come across because the hadith in it are rare and very insightful. It also has a trait to it, that really penetrates the heart- tazkiya and of the heart.

For a while I have been longing to read more of these hadiths, and alhamdulillah, I found a hadith book I used to read as a child and now that I reflect on it, I think it was because of this book I got really into the deen from a young age. But this book contains a number of hadiths that you will rarely ever hear, but the author has checked them all for authenticity so it’s a rare find- and a number of them are from Imam Ahmad.

There is no English translation of the Musnad but I have come across hadiths here and there from Imam Ahmad so this is a partial collection. Also some of these may not be from his Musnad, but perhaps from his other works as well.

The Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam said, “Abu Bakr does not precede you in anything in the way of prayer or fasting but in a secret (sirr) rooted deep in his heart.” (Manaqib as-Sahaba of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal). I have quoted this hadith before in my previous post about Sufism in the Hadith.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

«قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى: يَاابْنَ آدَمَ تَفَرَّغْ لِعِبَادَتِي أَمْلَأْ صَدْرَكَ غِنًى وَأَسُدَّ فَقْرَكَ، وَإِلَّا تَفْعَلْ، مَلَأْتُ صَدْرَكَ شُغْلًا وَلَمْ أَسُدَّ فَقْرَك»

(Allah the Exalted said, “O Son of Adam! Busy yourself in worshiping Me, and I will fill your chest with riches and dissipate your meekness. Otherwise, I will fill your chest with distracting affairs and will not do away with your meekness.”) At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah collected this Hadith and At-Tirmidhi said, “Hasan Gharib.”
-Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir of Surah Dhariyaat

On the authority of Da’ud ibn Abi Hind, Ahmad ibn Hanbal (d. 241/855) reports that al-Sha’bi said that Muhammad received his first revelations in a language other than his own:

“Prophethood descended upon the Prophet when he was 40 years old. Israfil was assigned to oversee his prophethood {qarana bi-nabuwatahu) for three years, and he would teach him and speak with him, but the Qur’an was not revealed in his language. After three years, Gabriel was assigned to him, and the Qur’an was revealed in his language.”

(Some scholars say that it was also said that the Quran was originally Syriac, that is, with Allah it was in Syriac and was revealed in Arabic.)

Ahmad ibn Hanbal reports on the authority of Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, on the authority of Mu’awiya ibn Salih, on the authority of Sa’id ibn Suwayd al-Kalbi, on the authority of Abd al-A’la ibn Hilal al-Salmi, on the authority of al-Irbad ibn Sariyya: The Apostle of God said, “I was the Seal of the Prophets with God when Adam was still unformed in the clay, and I will relate to you what this means: [I am] the prayer of my father Abraham, the good news of Jesus, and the vision of my mother which she saw just like the mothers of all the prophets see.”

The good news of Jesus sounds familiar to us because we’ve heard Christians talk about this.

Isma’il ibn Kathir cites a hadith report from Ibn Hanbal on the authority of Abu Dharr in which Muhammad says, ‘God sent no prophet except with the language of his people’. He then cites Q. 7:158 and another hadlth report from al-Bukharl and Muslim supporting the claim that the Prophet Muhammad was the one prophet sent to his people and to the rest of the people in the world.

Abu Thaalaba (radiallahu anhu) said: The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: “Righteousness is what achieves tranquility to one’s soul and peace to one’s heart, while sin disturbs the soul and the heart even though numerous people should license you (to do it).
(Reported by Imam Ahmad)

Abu Umamah (radiallahu anhu) said that a man asked the Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam: “What is faith?” He answered: “If you are pleased with your good deed and you are offended (upset) with your sins then you are a believer.” The man then said: “O Messenger of Allah, what is sin?” He answered: “If yourself is suspicious of something then abandon it.” (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

Abu al-Darda (radiallahu anhu) said: “Whoever follows a road seeking through it knowledge Allah will facilitate for him a road in Paradise; angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge as a token of satisfaction with what he does. All tat is in heavens and earth seek forgiveness for their scholars, even fish in the depths of water. The distinction of a scholar over a worshiper is like the the distinction of the full moon over all the planets. Scholars are the heirs of Prophets; for Prophets did not leave behind dollars or coins but left behind knowledge. Thus he who takes it has taken the lion’s share. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

Safwan ibn Assal (radiallahu anhu) said: The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: Angels lower their wings in satisfaction to anyone who goes out of his house seeking knowledge until he returns. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

Abu Darda (radiallahu anhu) said: The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: Nothing is heavier in the balance of deeds than good conduct. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

Ibn Umar (radiallahu anhu) said: The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: If you have four things, don’t worry about anything you missed in this world: “Truthfulness in speech, preserving one’s trust, good conduct and purity of food. (Musnad of Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: The most loved slaves of Allah to Allah are those most advising to His devotees. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: To make food blessed perform ablution before and after it. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: Seek medication, O slaves of Allah, for Allah has not decreed any illness but provided a medicine for it. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: Three people will not enter Paradise; an addict on intoxicants, a boycotter of his relatives, and a believer in magic. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: The Beneficient God in His high glory will have mercy upon the compassionate ones. So have mercy upon those on Earth, so that He Who is in heaven may have mercy upon you. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our minors who does not respect our seniors, who does not enjoin good and does not forbid evil. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: never faced anyone with anything he hated. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: He is cursed who commits the evil acts of Lot’s people (homosexuality). (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: Should a believer be humiliated in the presence of any person and the latter does not help him although he can, then Allah will humiliate him on the Day of Judgment. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: Anyone who goes to a fortune teller or a soothsayer and believes in what he says has, in fact, disbelieved in what has been revealed to Muhammad salallahu alayhi wasalam. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wasalam said: He is deprived of faith who is not trustworthy; and he is deprived of religion who is not bound by his covenant. (Reported by Imam Ahmad)

Surely Allah has chosen four sentences from all speech – 1) Subhan Allah 2) Alhamdulillah 3) La ilaha il-lal-lah 4) Allahu Akbar. So whoever says ‘Subhan Allah’, twenty good deeds are written for him/her and twenty bad deeds are omitted from his/her account. And likewise for ‘Allahu Akbar’ and ‘La ilaha il-lal-lah’. And whoever sincerely says ‘Alhamdulillahi rabbil alameen’ thirty good deeds are written for him/her and thirty bad deeds are omitted from his/her account.
(Reported in Musnad Imam Ahmad)

Subhana kallahumma wa bihamdika ash-haduana la illaha illa ant astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk, Ameen.
