Comparison of Prophetic Miracles

Near the end of Ibn Kathir’s book about the Prophet’s miracles (a poor translation, though nonetheless worthwhile to read here), he begins to compare the miracles of the Prophet Muhammad salallahu alayhi wasalam to the miracles of all the Ambiya. He only mentions a few, but its easy to see there are more similarities.

Ibn Kathir says the Sahabas experienced miracles because of the virtue of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam and really it the miracles of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam in that sense.

I will list a few of these miracles here.

-The camel of Hud/Saleh and Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasalam caring for camels when they complained to him about their treatment by their owners, them prostrating to him when they saw him, even though they were wild

-Ibrahim alayhi salam and the fire, and a similar experienced by the Sahabi Abu Muslim al-Khawlani, in Yemen, being thrown in fire and surviving during the reign of Abu Bakr
-One account states that Ibrahim was launched in a catapult into the fire, which is similar to Amr bin al ‘As being launched in a catapult over a wall during a battle
-Ismail and Zamzam: Near the time of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam, Zam Zam was a myth but one of the ancestors of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam (Abdul Mutallib I think) made tawaf and rediscovered Zamzam like Hajar discovered it with Ismail alayhi salam
-Ibrahim alayhi salam had a strong belief in Tawheed as a child and showed this in his breaking of the idols and this can be compared to the Zoroastrian fire going out in Persia on the night of the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wasalam)’s birth

-The Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam cured a blind man similar to how Yusuf alayhi salam cured his father Yaqoub alayhi salam
-Compare the 12 springs for the tribes of Israel to the well of Zamzam and how water would pour from his blessed hands salallahu alayhi wasalam
-How Musa made a light like the moon come from his hand to show Pharaoh and the splitting the moon by the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam and the fact the Nur of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam was greater than the moon
-The angels washing the heart of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam in childhood and at other times in his life compared to how Allah cleans the hearts of the Awliya
-The birds that spoke to Sulayman and Dawud alayhim salam compared to the birds that come to defend the Kaaba from destruction in the year of the Prophets salallahu alayhi wasalam’s birth in Surah al-Fil- as if the birds spoke to men inspired with the words of God and now these birds were relaying a message of God’s Protection and Destiny, dropping stones that had the names of their targets on them.
-The wind being subdued to Sulayman alayhi salam compared to the sandstorm at Badr described in the Qur’an (8:17) created after the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam threw dust in the air
-Armies of Jinns were subdued to Solomon but angels were subdued to Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wasalam to level and destroy whole towns (Taif) yet he did not allow them too
-The Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam transforming a wood stick into a sword, is similar to iron being made soft in the hands of Dawud alayhi salam who would then create chainmail armor for combat
-The mountains praised Allah with Dawud alayhi salam and in the hadith the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam and the Sahabas would hear the glorification of stones, speaking to trees and rocks

-In Surah al-Maidah we read about how the new believers asked Eesa alayhi salam to send down a table of food from heaven, and how the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam in his meals would have little food yet it would somehow continue,
-There are also some hadith about the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam resurrecting the dead like Eesa alayhi salaam
-The Ascension of Eesa alayhi salam and his eventual return compared to the Isra wa’l Miraj of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam and his salallahu alayhi wasalam’s return to Earth
-Prophets would let their people know of other Prophets to come after them, and Eesa alayhi salam sent his Disciples into Arabia to await the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam, but Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wasalam sent his people out into the whole world in waiting for no Prophet
-Comparing the walking on water of Eesa alayhi salam to the Sahabas walking on water on their battle horses

And there are many more examples.

These constitute a wisdom for the superiority of Muhammad salallahu alayhi wasalam as the Leader of all the Prophets alayhim salam and why Allah took a covenant from the Prophets that they would all follow him, especially if he salallahu alayhi wasalam came in their times. Lastly note that when you read the stories of the miracles you will always see that the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam is not amazed by the miracles that he is given but rather is always in awe of Allah and this constitutes part of his salallahu alayhi wasalam’s perfection.

Subhana kallahumma wa bihamdika ash-haduana la illaha illa ant astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk, ameen.

  1. All prophets are far above ordinary human beings in knowledge and closeness to Allah. Is it becoming for a non-prophet to compare and rank those so much greater than himself?
